  • An interesting analysis of the relative cost of study for major cities around the world

An interesting analysis of the relative cost of study for major cities around the world was put together by global real estate services firm Savills. The research focuses on larger cities, where international enrolment is often concentrated. They also look exclusively at the relative costs of purpose-built student housing, and at the tuition costs for non-specialist STEM degree programs (science, technology, engineering and math) at institutions ranked in the top tier of the QS global rankings.

Savills rendered all of those costs in a common currency – US$ – and has arrived at a summary of average monthly cost of study for an international student in 23 major world cities.

Cost of study findings

It found that US cities are the most expensive, with total monthly cost of study approaching US$ 6,000 – including tuition costs at ranked institutions in the range of US$ 3,000 – US$ 4,000 per month and purpose-built student housing costs of up to US$ 1,600.

London in UK and New York in US appear to be the word’s most expensive in terms of costs of accommodation. Chicago in US is ranked as the word’s most-expensive in terms of tuition fees for international students.

Paul Tostevin, associate director of Savills research states that certain cities attract more international students. The reason behind it is the clear affordability advantage, a huge potential for their education industry.

In addition, other factors such as institutional reputation, the appeal of the city – destination and job prospects after graduation – also play a significant role in the students’ decision-making process.
