Deciding what to study is no easy task. This article will discuss why you would want to study a law degree and what doors might open for you if you have a law degree under your belt.

There are three main factors you would want to consider when deciding your degree options:

  1. What is going to motivate you for the next three or four years and what are you going to enjoy studying? If you don’t get this right, you wont make it through to the end of your degree.
  2. What will build on your strengths and abilities and what will you do well in? Will you be suited to the intellectual demands of the course?
  3. How does your degree major fit into your career goals?

If law is what ticks all these options, than you are on the right track.

The modern law degree is changing to a degree that is widely applicable to various occupations. It promises a broad range of subjects related to law, shaping its students to be passionate about law in all its forms, rather than one-track minded in their pursuit to practice law.

Most students will choose law because they are interested in pursuing a career in the legal profession. Law is a demanding course and training places for solicitors and barristers are highly competitive and limited.

Undertaking a law degree will develop very strong oral and communication skills highly in demand by employers these days.

The way you will approach tasks will change to a clear, reasoned and logical way.

CyberLaw

CyberLaw or ICT Law as it’s commonly known, is a field becoming more and more popular in the modern age. Cyber law covers everything from piracy to spam – and while all it sounds like is tapping away on computers for days on end, it’s not.

Banking and Finance

Most areas in law have a specific focus, so you’ll have your pic of funds management, superannuation, capital markets and plenty more. The positive in this practice area is that as long as the money is flowing, you wont run out of work.

Professional Counselling

If you’re passionate about people, why not look at professional counselling, a very rewarding occupation. In this practice area, knowledge of the law is tremendously useful when students or young people seek advice, which often involves the law. Any counselor with a law degree will have an edge over their colleagues for sure.

These are just a few examples and you can always find more areas where you can apply your law degree.
