The main courses delivered by The Hotel School are Bachelor of Business in Hotel Management and Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management.

The Hotel School originally started operating in 1989 as an integral part of InterContinental Sydney. It has since developed close working relationships with many leading hospitality organizations both in Australia and internationally.

The Internship program or Work Integrated Learning (WIL) as it’s officially known as, combines classroom learning with its application in the working environment. Students are able to observe and work in an organization where they gain practical, real-life skills and experiences.

The objectives of the internship are to provide students with a range of practical experiences, exposing them to the general systems of operations and the philosophies and aims of partner organizations.

For internships, students may gain experience in any sector of tourism and hospitality and can work in a casual, part-time or full-time position capacity.

Undergraduate InternshipThe Hotel School Sydney

  • Requires students to complete six months continuous service (December to May) with one organization;
  • Accrue a minimum of 600 hours practical workplace experience;
  • May be undertaken within Australia or internationally;
  • Complete “on-the-job” training and academic assessments;
  • Receive supervision and mentoring by an academic tutor;

Postgraduate Internship

  • Assists students to critically reflect on the relationship between the academic studies and the workplace environment;
  • Accrue a minimum of 300 hours of practical workplace experience over 10 weeks within the tourism and hospitality sectors;

Bachelor of Business in Hotel Managementhotelschoolsydney

The three-year Bachelor of Business in Hotel Management offered at The Hotel School, focuses on management practices in hospitality industries and the skills needed for employment in a competitive, changing, global business environment.

The admission requirements for international students that want to study this course are: Year 12 or equivalent overseas qualification and IELTS Academic 6.0 with no band less than 5.5 or equivalent accepted English language tests (TOEFL iBT, Pearson PTE, Cambridge CAE). Applicants may also be invited to an interview as part of the final application process.

The Work Integrated Learning (Internship) program commences at the end of Year 1.

There are three intakes per year: February, July and November.

In order to successfully graduate this course, there are 24 subjects to be completed, 4 subjects per semester (6 months).

Students that completed a vocational course in Tourism or Hospitality such as an Advanced Diploma of Hospitality may get up to 12 credits towards their Bachelor of Business Hotel Management and students with a Diploma in related areas, can get up to 8 credits.

‘Introduction to Professional Practice’ is one of the subjects preparing students for their internship and it’s studied in the first year. Southern Cross University has won awards for this subject. At the end of this subject, students get interviewed by the Hotels HR & Recruitment staff.

Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management

The Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management is designed for students with or without industry experience who wish to gain a higher degree in the field of tourism and hospitality studies. The degree is flexible with students able to choose a course of study that matches their prospective career path offering a coursework schedule consisting of hotel and tourism management and an optional workplace internship.

The course is comprised of 16 subjects over two years. The year is divided in trimesters (4 months=1 trimester) and students can choose to study combinations of 3+3+2 or others as long as they complete 8 subjects per year.

To qualify for admission, an international student needs to show a Bachelor degree and an English language test comparable to Academic IELTS 6.5 overall.

Students that have graduated with a Bachelor degree in Tourism or Hospitality may get up to 4 credits for their Master of International Tourism and Hotel Management.

Most major international hotel chains and brands have a presence in Australia. As well as hotels, Australia has a multitude of events companies, convention centers, casinos, international airlines and a huge range of smaller boutique hotels and luxury resorts.

Roles in hotel management have great room for growth. Not only can hotel front desk managers become general managers, but they can also work in different hotels within the hotel chain. This could lead to travel opportunities and room for advancement into executive positions.

The Hotel School in Sydney and Melbourne campuses have an excellent mix of domestic and international students (50% – 50%). International students come from different countries such as Italian, French, Finnish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Subcontinent, South East Asian etc.
